Egg Bowl Champs!

Ole Miss beat the best Mississippi State team ever by two touchdowns, 31-17, dashing Dan Mullen's playoff dreams and sending the Bulldogs whimpering back to Starkville.

It doesn't get any more satisfying than that, or does it?

Actually, it does.

Especially considering that Ole Miss beat State with its No. 1 (Treadwell) and No. 2 (Sanders) receivers on the bench, Bo Wallace had a badly sprained ankle, and linebacker Serderius Bryant was suspended for the 1st half.

In light of those factors, the Rebels bested the Bulldogs with one hand tied behind their back.

They did it with ferocious and relentless defense and an offensive game plan that was pure genius. Hugh Freeze created a running game out of thin air, using creative plays and taking advantage of Jaylen Walton's burning speed. It was almost magical, but instead of smoke and mirrors it was just great X's and O's by Freeze.

The hobbled Bo Wallace was far from perfect, but the passes he did complete gashed the Bulldogs for enormous chunks of yards. The record-setting senior quarterback cemented his legacy as one of few to lead Ole Miss to three consecutive bowl games and the double bonus of being two of three against Mississippi State. Thanks in large part to this win, Wallace will forever be considered one of the greats to play quarterback for Ole Miss, and also...better than Dak.

The great Prescott was rendered mortal by an aggressive group of hungry LandSharks. Dave Wommack dialed up blitz after blitz and the pressure was more than Prescott, a former Heisman candidate, could take. The defensive game plan was stellar, too.

Hugh Freeze, now 2 of 3 in Egg Bowls, out-coached Dan Mullen and finally slayed the dragon that was Mullen's bragging rights over the rivalry. Mullen left Oxford mad, bitter and disgusted, throwing his defensive coaching staff under the bus and then wrecking the bus on the way home just for good measure

Ole Miss finished the season 9-3 and awaits a decent bowl invite in a warm-weather locale. But the Rebels already won the most important bowl of all.

The Rebels won the biggest Egg Bowl ever, beating the best State team ever and the Egg Bowl Trophy is back where it belongs.

All is right with the world once more.
