Week 3 SEC Power Rankings

It was another exciting, drama-filled week in the SEC. We had it all: Power running attacks, air raids, nail biters and upsets. Even as the SEC West continues to beat up on inferior opponents it still looks like the cream of college football's crop. Five teams from the West are in the AP's Top 10, including Ole Miss. Meanwhile, the SEC East has already begun to eat itself, as South Carolina and Georgia each have an early loss. The SEC West will do the same starting in October. For now we are left to guess who is better, and who is a pretender. Now that the dust from Week 3 has settled, here's how I think it all shakes out.

East
1. Georgia. That may sound absurd considering the Bulldogs lost to South Carolina last night, but I think UGA will recover. South Carolina will lose at least another game. The Gamecocks have too many weaknesses. If Georgia hadn't missed that chip-shot field goal the Bulldogs would be a Top 5 team this morning. As long as the Bulldogs have Todd Gurley they can righten the ship. Heck, even Steve Spurrier was surprised his team won. "Sometimes it's just your turn to win," he said. Therefore, I'm leaving Georgia at No. 1.

2. Mizzou. Pinkel is a good coach, Maty Mauk is a good quarterback, and the Tigers are undefeated. Saturday's win over UCF was against a decent team, and Mizzou shook them off like an annoying toy dog. The Tigers are a threat in the East.

3. South Carolina. Outback Bowl, here we come. Spurrier will field another 9 or 10 win team. Yawn.

4. Florida. Will Muschamp won't survive this season. Shocked fan faces in the Swamp don't look good against Kentucky. Florida got was on the right side of a totally blown delay of game penalty in that 3 OT win, but the Gators' luck will run out soon enough. Florida will lose to Alabama, LSU and each of the three teams above, and that won't be good enough for Foley. Muschamp watch has begun.

5. Tennessee. The Vols might beat Florida, but until I see a little more I'll keep them here.

6. Kentucky. I see 6 wins and a bowl game in Mark Stoops' future. The Wildcats look better. Still, Florida sucks, so whatever.

7. Vanderbilt. Lol! UMass was 2-10 in 2013, and entered Nashville 0-2. Narrowly beating the Minutemen is an embarrassment.

West
1. Auburn. In my mind, the Tigers will beat A&M in one or the best games of all time. That's why I have Auburn at No. 1. By the way, being No. 1 in this division might as well be an automatic playoff berth.

2. Texas A&M. I can't wait to watch the Aggies play another SEC team. They took their foot off the gas the last couple weeks against the scrub teams, but I know Kevin Sumlin and Kenny Hill could stomp it to the floor at any time, and I wouldn't want to be those guys on the other side.

3. Alabama. I am leaving the Tide ahead of Ole Miss until the Rebels prove they can beat Bama, but know that I was very tempted to put Ole Miss in this spot. Bama looks a little softer than usual, and I don't see Saban's team playing all the way through its schedule without at least one loss.

4. Ole Miss. The only questions I have about the Rebels at this point:

a) Can Ole Miss really run the ball when it needs to?

b) Can the Rebels stop a good running team?

I know this: Bo Wallace has a lot of weapons and he knows how to use them. Against lesser athletic opponents the Rebels cannot be stopped through the air, but eventually Ole Miss will face defenses with defensive backs that can hang with the Rebel receivers. What then? Well, a good running game would help and for now I just don't know.

5. LSU. Great defense, but the offense leaves much to be desired. The Tigers can't score enough points to beat Nos 1-4 (above).

6. Arkansas. That offensive line and those running backs. Wow! The Razorbacks ran for more than 400 yards against Texas Tech. The Hogs will make a bowl game this year. Book it.

7. Mississippi State. Again, State is a good team. I could see the Bulldogs knocking off one or more of the teams above, but at this point I think all six of the teams above would be favored in a head-to-head matchup until State proves  differently.
