This Week in the SEC

The television slate offers a few doozies on Saturday. Since most of you will be at or watching the Ole Miss game, you'll want to set your DVR to record Georgia at South Carolina and Arkansas at Texas Tech. Out of morbid curiosity I'll keep an eye on Massachusetts at Vanderbilt to try to get a gauge on just how disastrous Derek Mason's first season coaching the Commodores will be. It's another weekend of SEC football, and for that reason alone, it's sure to be interesting. More thoughts below the capsules.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13
Massachusetts (0-2) at Vanderbilt (0-2, 0-1 SEC)
Series: VU leads, 2-0
11 a.m. CT • FSN
Nashville, Tenn. • Vanderbilt Stadium (40,350)
Sirius: 119 • XM: 190

Watching Vanderbilt play UMass is the equivalent of slowing down on the interstate for good long look at the car wreck. It's called rubbernecking, and that's exactly what I'll be doing when I check the score of this one Saturday afternoon. How bad is Vanderbilt? We should have a better idea after this one.

UCF (0-1) at Missouri (2-0, 0-0 SEC)
Series: MO leads, 1-0
11 a.m. CT • SEC Network
Columbia, Mo. • Memorial Stadium - Faurot Field (72,000)
Sirius: 91 • XM: 91

Missouri looked pretty good against its first two opponents, but UCF will be the Tigers' toughest test yet. Penn State edged the Knights 26-24 in their season opener. Meanwhile Mizzou has beaten up on South Dakota State (38-18) and Toledo (49-24).  Sophomore QB Maty Mauk threw for 325 yards and 5 touchdowns against Toledo. Because of the way Mauk is playing and the fact that the game is in Columbia, I'll take Mizzou.

Georgia (1-0, 0-0 SEC) at South Carolina (1-1, 0-1 SEC)
Series: UGA leads, 47-17-2
3:30 p.m. ET • CBS
Last: UGA, 41-30 (2013 at Athens)
Columbia, S.C. • Williams-Brice Stadium (80,250)
Sirius: 91 • XM: 91

South Carolina hasn't looked good in either of its first two games. Beating East Carolina 33-23 does little to convince me that the Gamecocks can stop Todd Gurley, but the key to a Georgia victory lies not with Gurley, but with Bulldog quarterback Hutson Mason. If he can connect on his passes and force the Gamecocks to play the pass Gurley will run roughshod and Georgia will prevail. Since South Carolina has allowed 1,000,000 yards passing in two games I question whether the Gamecocks will be able to stop Mason. Steve Spurrier will throw visors and headphones in disgust at least once per quarter. I picked Georgia.

Arkansas (1-1, 0-1 SEC) at Texas Tech (2-0)
Series: ARK leads, 28-7
2:30 p.m. CT • ABC
Lubbock, Texas • Jones AT&T Stadium (60,454 )
Sirius: 84 • XM: 84

I was impressed with the Arkansas offensive line and running backs in the 1st half of its opener against Auburn. Brett Bielema's club wasn't good enough to stop Auburn, but against much lesser Nicholls, the Razorbacks averaged almost 13 yards per carry, running for 495 yards on 40 carries. The offensive line is legit. Texas Tech is nowhere near as good as Auburn. If Arkansas is for real the Hogs will beat the Red Raiders. Tech is a 2-point favorite. I like Arkansas in this one.

Louisiana-Lafayette (1-1) at Ole Miss (2-0, 1-0 SEC)
Series: UM leads, 3-0
3 p.m. CT • SEC Network
Oxford, Miss. • Vaught-Hemingway Stadium (60,580)
Sirius: 134 • XM: 192

The Ragin Cajuns return a bunch of starters off a club that finished 9-4. For that reason I viewed this as a possible trap game in the preseason, but Louisiana-Lafeyette got clubbed by Louisiana Tech last weekend, which racked up 533 yards of offense on its way to a 48-20 win. Plus, Mark Hudspeth's team hasn't fared well against Power 5 competition. Last year the Cajuns lost to Arkansas, Kansas State, Louisiana-Monroe and South Alabama. This isn't a team that should be able to beat at Top 20 SEC team. Ole Miss is playing well on both sides of the ball. I like the Rebels in a route.

Mississippi State (2-0, 0-0) at South Alabama (1-0)
Series: MSU leads, 1-0
3 p.m. CT • ESPNews
Mobile, Ala. • Ladd Peebles Stadium (40,646)
Sirius: 119 • XM: 190

Mississippi State is only a 14-point favorite. Even though it's at South Alabama, that seems like a no-brainer to me. The Bulldogs will win by three touchdowns. The only head-scratcher in this game is, why is Mississippi State playing at South Alabama?

Southern Mississippi (1-1) at Alabama (2-0, 0-0 SEC)
Series: UA leads, 33-6-2
5 p.m. CT • ESPN2
Tuscaloosa, Ala. • Bryant-Denny Stadium (101,821)
Sirius: 137 • XM: 191

Shield your eyes and those of your loved ones. Southern is about to have things done to it that shouldn't be done on television. How bad are the Golden Eagles? So bad that they only beat Alcorn State by six points last weekend. That's the most humiliating winning score I've every heard. I'll take the Tide by 48. Heck, I'd take the Tide by 58.

Louisiana-Monroe (2-0) at LSU (2-0, 0-0 SEC)
Series: LSU leads, 2-0
6 p.m. CT • ESPNU
Baton Rouge, La. • Tiger Stadium (102,321)
Sirius: 84 • XM: 84

LSU shouldn't have a problem here. I picked the Tigers (31-point favorites).

Kentucky (2-0, 0-0 SEC) at Florida (1-0, 0-0 SEC)
Series: UF leads, 47-17
7:30 p.m. ET • SEC Network
Last Meeting: UF, 24-7 (2013 at Lexington)
Gainesville, Fla. • Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field (88,548)
Sirius: 119 • XM: 190

Don't look now, but Florida may finally have an offense thanks to new offensive coordinator Kurt Roper. The Gators posted 65 points on Eastern Michigan a week ago. Kentucky should be somewhat tougher, but Florida has something to prove and this one is in Gainesville. I'll take the Gators by 17.5.

Tennessee (2-0, 0-0 SEC) at Oklahoma (2-0)
Series: Tied, 1-1
8 p.m. ET • ABC
Norman, Okla. • Memorial Stadium (82,112)
Sirius: 91 • XM: 91

After watching the Vols play Arkansas State last weekend, I'm just not sure Tennessee is ready for Oklahoma. I like the Sooners by 20.5.

Rice (0-1) at Texas A&M (2-0, 1-0 SEC)
Series: A&M leads, 51-27-2
8 p.m. CT • ESPN2
College Station, Texas • Kyle Field (106,000)
Sirius: 134 • XM: 192

I'm shocked that A&M is only favored by 31.5. Aggies all the way.

OPEN: Auburn (2-0, 1-0 SEC)

The only sure thing this weekend.
