On Sunday a source told me that Hugh Freeze believes Anthony Alford will be a really big-time player for Ole Miss this fall, which isn't necessarily surprising given Alford's background, but considering the depth the Rebels have throughout the defensive backfield and at quarterback I wondered where Freeze imagined Alford getting his big-time reps.
On Tuesday, Freeze enlightened me in his post practice remarks.
“I love him,” said Freeze of Alford. “He took some snaps yesterday and I thought he looked quite explosive. He looked good at punt return this morning and defensively he’s getting better and better with each practice. I’m just very glad we have him.”
Alford is listed as a safety, but could it be that Alford will play the role of Barry Brunetti last year, as the situational speed-threat quarterback?
A sophomore transfer from Southern Mississippi, Alford is no stranger to quarterback. He started five games for the Eagles as a true freshman and led Petal to the 6A state championship game in 2011. He was rated the 5th best dual-threat quarterback in the country his senior season, throwing for 2058 yards and running for 1,738 more.
Suffice it to say, Alford has jets on his cleats.
So while the common thought has been that redshirt freshman DeVante Kincade will be the running quarterback to spell Bo Wallace this season, don't be surprised if you see some or maybe even more of Alford. And rest assured, Alford would like all the snaps he can get.
"I miss having the ball in my hands more than anything," Alford said.
It also sounds like Alford also has a good chance to snag a job as a kick or punt returner, where the competition is wide open.
Regardless of where you see Alford this season you can go ahead and prepare yourself to see a lot of him. Talent like his won't be kept on the sidelines.
