Thoughts on 2014

Having been glued to the television for the better part of a week now I've come to the determination that the SEC West will be open for business in 2014. Alabama and LSU will be good, but not unbeatable. Johnny Manziel is a one of a kind, and I'll be shocked if A&M can replicate his offensive production. I expect the Aggies to dip in 2014.

The opportunity will be there for Ole Miss to take another step forward next fall.

If Ole Miss had beaten Mississippi State I'd probably be more optimistic than I should be, but the reality is the Rebels will be one of few SEC teams with a senior quarterback starting next season, and probably the only team with a three-year starter at the position. LSU, Alabama and probably Texas A&M will have new starters behind center. I don't see losing Donte Moncrief to the NFL as a major concern. Ole Miss has plenty of depth at wide receiver. Running back and tight end also seem solid, although the Rebels definitely need more depth at tight end behind Engram.

The development of the offensive line will be the biggest factor in determining how far the Rebels get. When Ole Miss can run the football effectively Hugh Freeze's offense is difficult to stop. When running gets difficult so do 1st downs. The running game will go only as far as the offensive line takes it. It'll be interesting to see how that group develops this recruiting season and off-season.

Defensively, I expect the Rebels to be okay. More pass rushers would be nice, but I think that unit will take another leap forward next fall.

We've got 8 more months to discuss this, so I'll check back later!
