Greenwood tight end Sammie Epps played so well in the Alabama - Mississippi All-Star Classic that other SEC schools sat up and took notice. From
Gulflive.com:
Epps, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound senior receiver out of Greenwood High School, recently put on a show in Montgomery, Ala. He earned MVP honors for Mississippi in a 21-17 loss where he had seven catches for 125 yards and a touchdown.
"Some people may have been surprised by what Sammie did, but not me," said GHS head coach Clinton Gatewood. "I've been telling anyone who would listen that Sammie is an SEC player since he was in the ninth grade starting on my varsity squad."
Epps came into the game with only one SEC offer, Ole Miss. He's been verbally committed to the Rebels since the spring when they offered him a scholarship to play tight end.
Even though he's solid with his commitment to Ole Miss (Publisher's Note: Epps actually opened up his recruitment over the weekend), the GHS senior says he will keep an open mind and that he will probably schedule official visits for MSU and Auburn.
Epps certainly caught the eye of South Panola's Lance Pogue, head coach of the Mississippi all-stars.
"He's an animal," Pogue said. "He has a great future. Not a lot of people knew about him coming in. He's a playmaker who can really run with unbelievable ball skills. ... All he's going to do is get bigger, better and stronger at the next level.
"The sky's the limit for him. His best is in front of him."
