Ole Miss (7-4) could still possibly get a Gator Bowl invite with a win. Mississippi State (5-6) must win to become bowl eligible.
Program momentum is also at stake. The luster has finally worn off State head coach Dan Mullen despite three straight bowl games. Last year's 41-24 Egg Bowl loss plays a role in their displeasure along with the recognition that the Bulldogs have yet to ever get a program-defining win under Mullen. A victory for State would certainly bring Mullen back into favor. In fact, he may need this one worse than any of the others.
If desperation counts for anything State would seem to have the edge, but there's a slight problem...quarterback. Dak Prescott and Tyler Russell are battling injuries. The Bulldogs may be forced to rely on freshman Damian Williams. Williams led State to an overtime victory of Arkansas on Saturday so it's not as if he's incapable, but offense has been a problem for Mississippi State this year. A 3rd string freshman QB is unlikely to be an advantage. And I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see Prescott jog out on that field despite Mullen's statements to the contrary.
Nothing State could or will do tonight will surprise me.
Mullen has based his entire head coaching existence on beating Ole Miss. State fans don't love Mullen for beating Kentucky, Alcorn State and Troy. They love him for those 3 consecutive Egg Bowl wins. The love affair dwindled after last year's loss. A 2nd consecutive loss to the Rebels would be a tremendous setback. Mullen can't allow it to happen.
An old lawyer friend of mine used to say when another lawyer pulled something over on him in court, "Live by the sword, die by the sword." Eventually that weapon you use so skillfully will be what kills you.
For Mullen that sword is the Egg Bowl.
I'm not saying Mullen will lose his job if State loses, but momentum is so important in college football. If Ole Miss wins State will have lost all of it. Those three bowl games will be distant memories. State will be home for Christmas. Ole Miss is already winning the Magnolia State in recruiting. Mullen may never be able to get it back, and he knows it.
His back is against the wall.
Tonight, anything goes.
I expect a great game.
