Ole Miss kicked off bowl practice today in preparation for a January 5 Compass Bowl match-up with Pitt. It's been written to the point of being cliche that one of the advantages of being in a bowl game is the extra practice time for the players. It's an additional two weeks of practice and an extra game, and I'm sure there is value in that, but it's also a reward - a chance for the team to have some fun and enjoy the fruits of a good season. These kids deserve some fun.
Speaking of fun, nothing would be more fun than another win and a 7-6 finish.
A Compass Bowl win would put an exclamation point on the season heading into National Signing Day and 2013. The Rebels ended the season on a 3-game losing skid before emphatically putting Mississippi State away in the Egg Bowl. A follow-up victory in the Compass Bowl would make the statement that the Rebels have gotten over that hump for good and send the message that blue skies await. It would also be a major selling point as most Ole Miss recruits will be watching.
Speaking of bowl games, the guys from the Ole Miss video department started a series on the Defining Moments in Ole Miss Bowl History. This one from the 1948 Delta Bowl features some great pictures of Rebel legend Charlie Conerly, who looks like he could have just as easily been a Hollywood screen legend as an NFL football player.
